My name is Karen Parker. I am the Associate Dean for English, English for Academic Purposes, Reading, and Student Life Skills (SLS) at Broward College North Campus in Coconut Creek, Florida--a suburb of Ft. Lauderdale. I began working at BC as a fulltime English professor in 2008 and eventually moved to the position of Associate Dean in 2013. I have worked in higher education for over 20 years where I have found that my passion is working with students to help them succeed in their college, career, and personal goals.
As an Associate Dean, I have been able to work closely with faculty, administration, and colleagues across the college by using data to manage and promote student success and teacher efficacy. As a department, I led the faculty in further developing our professional learning community by researching and sharing instructional strategies that have benefited both students and faculty members, through formal and informal professional development seminars. I have also led cross-discipline, campus and college-wide professional development workshops on incorporating data, such as the Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE), into andragogic practices to promote and develop an active learning environment.
