You Hear Me Talking to You:  Confessions of an Angry Black Woman


The term “Angry Black Woman” is used as a pejorative for African American women.  In my presentation "You Hear Me Talking to You -- Confessions of an Angry Black Woman", I explore the historical context of the ABW, how this stereotypical myth perpetuates a culture of racism and misogyny, and what can we do to combat this term.  Participants are also asked to evaluate their own anger and channel that into telling their own story.

African American women are 70% more likely to be diagnosed with stage IV breast cancer, the deadliest type, as a result of late diagnosis and not receiving recommended treatment across all breast cancer types (Lu Chen, researcher at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center at the University of Washington School of Public Health”).

White women have a 90 percent five-year breast cancer survival rate, while black women’s five-year survival rate is about 79 percent — on par with white women’s survival rates in the 1970s. (as reported by Huffington Post 10/16/15).

African-American women continue to have a three- to four-fold higher risk of maternal mortality compared to White women.  In California, between 2011-2013, per 100,000 live births, the deaths were 4.9 Hispanic; 7.0 White, Non-Hispanic, 7.8 Asian, Non-Hispanic, 26.4 African American, non Hispanic (California Maternal Quality Care collaborative) https://www.cmqcc.org/focus-areas/maternal-mortality/racial-disparities.

Black women in the United States who work full time, year-round are typically paid just 63 cents for every dollar paid to white, non-Hispanic men. Overall, women employed full time, year-round are typically paid 80 cents for every dollar paid to men.
